WINTER LIGHT BIG CYPRESS
The evening light cast a golden glow over the swamp, warming the cypress trees—perfect for a red filter to enhance contrast and deepen the sky’s mood. Walking into the swamp with Niki, I felt memories rush back. Feeling the mud between my toes again was incredible! As I composed the shot, waiting for the perfect light, it was like stepping back in time—reliving the days we lived here, immersed in Big Cypress National Preserve.
This was the third photograph I captured—the moment it all came full circle. The weight of the film, the patience of waiting for light, the swamp beneath my feet—it was exhilarating. I was home.
Returning to Film: A Journey Back to My Roots
From 1971 to 2014, I shot exclusively with large-format film, but declining health forced me to switch to digital. For a decade, I thought my film days were over. Then, during a hospital stay in 2024, I knew I had to find a way back. I shared my thoughts with Paul, my darkroom assistant, who found the perfect Alvandi camera. When I returned home, everything awaited—camera, light meters, dark cloth, and tools I hadn’t used in years.
With that click of the shutter, I wasn’t just taking a photograph—I was reclaiming a part of myself.
